How Hot Is Your Website?

CSS galleries have provided a good way to determine if your web design is any good, but they are run by a handful of individuals and don’t always reflect how the general public feels. In many cases just getting listed let alone getting good rating (on those galleries that allow voting) is very difficult.

Hot or not has been very popular for people, and the paradigm is shifting to websites. A number of websites have appeared that allows users to vote on the design quality of a website. Although they work slightly differently they all have the same purpose determining if your site is hot or not!

Patterned backgrounds are a very popular finishing touch for many websites. While it seems that diagonal stripes are in this season (especially for Web 2.0 sites), there are so many other options from elegant to whimsy, preppy to proper. The following sites have some really fabulous patterns to choose from:

1. Squidfingers - 158 absolutely stunning background patterns by Travis Beckham.

2. DinPattern - about 50 patterns (and it looks like more will be added) that are beautiful eye candy. There is even a live preview option to test out the backgrounds as you browse.

3. Kaliber10000 - currently there are 927 pixellated patterns on their site, many of which are user submitted.

4. 44Suburbia - 61 very sophisticated patterns

Textures can make interesting backgrounds for web sites, but they are also great for use in creating custom images with interest, depth and of course, texture. There are literally thousands of sites where you can find textures, but here are 13 that I check first when I need inspiration, something unique, high quality and low cost.

1. deviantART - A community of artists and enthusaists who submit and share their art. deviantART contains thousands of textures, tiles, backgrounds and images - some are free, some for purchase.

Deviant Art

2. Bittbox - Definitely one of my favorite sites for graphic design extras. Bittbox has a nice collection of free Photoshop brushes, fonts, and recently they have added some free textures, too.
