Whether you need to send a high resolution photo to a client or a flashy new video your co-worker, your average email service is just not going to be able to handle it. Most email services allow you to transfer 10MB at any given time and you don’t always know that your recipient even has that much available - all you know is that you have to get the files to them. Unless you both are very comfortable with FTP, you are going to have to find a better way to get the files from Inbox A to Inbox B in a timely manner. There are plenty of applications available to help you move those big files - ranging from the free and easy to the expensive and decked out with extras. Here are the highlights on 13 services you can use to move big files: YouSendIt - YouSendIt has always been my first choice - it has been around the longest, it’s easy to use and they have a solid free service. There is no software to download - everything is web-based. YouSendIt offers a variety of delivery options and packages for individuals, businesses and corporations. The totally free version has a limit of 100MB, requires no registration and offers some tracking options. YouSendIt also has a FREE Trial Offer on their premium packages. Send, Receive and Track digital files up to 2 GB each.

Patterned backgrounds are a very popular finishing touch for many websites. While it seems that diagonal stripes are in this season (especially for Web 2.0 sites), there are so many other options from elegant to whimsy, preppy to proper. The following sites have some really fabulous patterns to choose from: 1. Squidfingers - 158 absolutely stunning background patterns by Travis Beckham. 2. DinPattern - about 50 patterns (and it looks like more will be added) that are beautiful eye candy. There is even a live preview option to test out the backgrounds as you browse. 3. Kaliber10000 - currently there are 927 pixellated patterns on their site, many of which are user submitted. 4. 44Suburbia - 61 very sophisticated patterns

Textures can make interesting backgrounds for web sites, but they are also great for use in creating custom images with interest, depth and of course, texture. There are literally thousands of sites where you can find textures, but here are 13 that I check first when I need inspiration, something unique, high quality and low cost. 1. deviantART - A community of artists and enthusaists who submit and share their art. deviantART contains thousands of textures, tiles, backgrounds and images - some are free, some for purchase. 2. Bittbox - Definitely one of my favorite sites for graphic design extras. Bittbox has a nice collection of free Photoshop brushes, fonts, and recently they have added some free textures, too.

WordPress makes a great CMS thanks to its easy to use interface. As a designer it is a relatively quick way for me to put together a scalable, easy to maintain, and attractive web site for clients. For my clients, WordPress offers an interface that most of them can handle based on their experience with the basic MS Office products. I have one client who like tables - not the HTML-based tables - but tables to display data. She needed to be able to add a table of data to a page without having to know anything special. The current TinyMCE interface doesn’t accommodate tables so I headed to the WordPress Codex to find out if there was a plugin to make adding tables easier. I found TinyMCE Advanced and it works GREAT!

Design galleries showcase well designed websites, which doesn’t mean that they need to be well designed themselves right? Well of course they should, but with the explosion of design galleries there are some pretty terrible looking ones. 12. Plastic Pilots http://www.plasticpilots.com/

As a web designer, I get asked daily for web hosting recommendations. While there are literally thousands of web hosting companies that provide excellent service, great uptime and have knowledgeable tech support, I have compiled a list of 13 hosting companies that either I use personally, have clients using or trusted associates recommend. These are companies I recommend if you are looking for hosting for your blog, small to medium size business site, online store or community. Most of these sites feature two things - cPanel and Fantastico - both of which are requirements for ease of use in my book. cPanel is easy to navigate and loaded with features allowing you to easily check stats, set up email, create database, password protect directories, and more. Fantastico offers the fastest and most straight forward installs for more than 20 of our favorite Open Source programs and scripts like WordPress, phpBB, ZenCart, Galleries, and other utilities. For the average website owner or blogger, these features cut down on a lot of tech support/webmaster support time. In alphabetical order the web hosting companies I recommend are: Based out of Atlanta, GA, A Small Orange provides both shared hosting and virtual private servers. They advertise no limit hosting, cPanel, multiple stats packages, Fantastico and advanced email options. Blogs About Hosting is the hosting service of E Webscapes which is owned by WordPress for Dummies author Lisa Sabin Wilson. Affordable, reliable and an owner who “gets it” when it comes to the specific needs of blogs, makes Blogs About Hosting a great option. (Disclosure - I do design work for E Webscapes in addition to my freelance work)

these single page (mostly!) sites are a great place to look for great resources and links for any web designer or developer. The oldest and probably most well known of these resources, is the Web Developers Handbook, published by Vitaly Friedman, who you may know from Smashing Magazine.
